kids said: In August 2004 our world was turned upside-down when a Category 4 hurricane slammed into our town, leveling many homes and schools, damaging most others and completely destroying our church. As the children's pastor, I was very concerned about our kids. But to be honest, I had to rebuild my own life as well--our home was among those destroyed. Initially, there was no tangible way to reach the kids. Roads were impassible, there was no mail delivery and no phone service. We were completely dependent upon outside agencies for relief. Our church met in a tent for four months until moving to multiple rental facilities. When we did get back together for church, the best help for the kids was just to talk and pray together, sharing our experiences. I also tried to be lighthearted about it, about how some of their favorite puppets were found peeking out from under piles of debris in the old kids room. They took it well. Mainly I found that the kids just wanted to get back to "normal," and so that's what we tried to do. Thanks for the focus on disaster response! I don't think one could ever be completely prepared, but it is important to think about it!
